Web26 jul. 1991 · Throughout the book the term ''hopping'' is defined as the inelastic tunneling transfer of an electron between two localized electronic states centered at different locations. Such processes do not occur in conventional electronic transport in solids, since localized states are not compatible with the translational symmetry of crystals. WebElectrons carry the basic unit of charge e, equal to 1.6022 × 10 −19 coulomb. They have a small mass and move rapidly. Most electrons in solids are bound to the atoms in local orbits, but a small fraction of the electrons are available to move easily through the entire crystal. These so-called conduction electrons carry the electrical current.
